RDS helps users create and manage databases in the cloud without handling server administration tasks.

In simple words:

Amazon RDS allows you to run databases in AWS without installing and maintaining database servers manually.


What is a Database?

A database is a collection of organized data.

Examples:

  • Student Records

  • Employee Information

  • Banking Data

  • Customer Details

  • E-commerce Product Information

A database helps store, retrieve, update, and manage data efficiently.


Why Do We Need Amazon RDS?

Steps to Create an Amazon RDS Instance

Step 1: Login to AWS Console

Login to your AWS account.


Step 2: Open RDS Service

Search:

RDS

Click:

Amazon RDS

Step 3: Create Database

Click:

Create Database

Step 4: Select Database Engine

Example:

MySQL

Step 5: Choose Template

For practice:

Free Tier

Step 6: Configure Database

Enter:

  • Database Name

  • Master Username

  • Password

Example:

Username: admin
Password: ********

Step 7: Configure Storage

Select storage size.

Example:

20 GB

Step 8: Configure Connectivity

Choose:

  • VPC

  • Security Group

  • Public Access (Optional)


Step 9: Create Database

Click:

Create Database

OUTPUT:

AWS will launch the RDS instance.


Connecting to RDS

Applications connect using the RDS Endpoint.

Example:

database-name.xxxxxx.us-east-1.rds.amazonaws.com

Applications use:

  • Hostname

  • Username

  • Password

  • Port Number

to access the database.
